Vik Dunis: Larry Dunis

The Bushpea Gang

Vik, Geoff, Nikki and Laz

(Bowra Station near Cunnamulla, Qld, July 2009)

Bushpea Birds commenced as a competition between brothers Vik and Larry to see who could photograph the most Australian bird species before one of them dropped off the perch.

At the time both brothers looked forward to the competition lasting many years but less than twelve months later Larry was diagnosed with an illness which considerably reduced the odds of a lengthy competition.

Larry still delighted in photographing birds in all parts of Australia and retained this passion for as long as he was physically able to hold a camera. He was ecstatic in May, 2010, when he and Vik observed the often considered mythical Grey Falcon on the remote Strzelecki Track in South Australia and Larry was able to photograph it. (see Larry's account on the Grey Falcon page).

The brothers' Bushpea Bird Competition had lasted less than three years when the result was finally determined on the 11th September, 2010. At that time Larry had photographed 452 Australian bird species and Vik had photographed 434.

Not only had Larry photographed the most birds, but his competence and talent for photography enabled him to achieve a high degree of quality.

Well done Larry. Fantastic job mate.
